As students head back to school on Thursday, September 3, 2026, Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is reminding motorists to slow down and stay alert around schools, playgrounds and residential areas. Drivers can expect increased pedestrian traffic, busy crosswalks and more activity on local roads as students return to classrooms.
School zones in Grande Prairie are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days, while playground zones are enforced from 7:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset. The maximum speed limit in both school and playground zones is 30 km/h.
"Back-to-school is an exciting time in Grande Prairie, with students, families and teachers getting ready for a new year,” says City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. "Slowing down in school zones and staying alert around crosswalks, buses and busy drop-off areas are simple actions that make a real difference. By looking out for one another, we can help make the return to school a safe and exciting one for everyone."
Road safety reminders for drivers
Obey the posted 30 km/h speed limit in all school and playground zones.
Be prepared for pedestrians at intersections and marked crosswalks.
Watch for school safety patrollers and follow their directions.
Take extra care when backing out of driveways and parking spaces.
Do not pass another moving vehicle in an active school or playground zone.
Be aware of students travelling by bicycle and other wheeled devices.
Parking and drop-off safety
Throughout September, Enforcement Services will also be monitoring parking and traffic safety around schools. Common parking infractions include:
Parking within five metres of a crosswalk or intersection.
Stopping or parking in designated "No Parking" or "No Stopping" areas.
Parking on a sidewalk.
Parking facing against the direction of traffic.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to familiarize themselves with their school's designated drop-off and pick-up procedures before the first day of classes to help reduce congestion and keep students safe.
