As families prepare for Halloween festivities, the Grande Prairie Police Service is reminding residents to take a few simple steps to help keep children safe while trick-or-treating.
"Halloween is an exciting night for children and families, but it can also mean more pedestrians, heavier traffic, and reduced visibility," says GPPS Community Engagement Constable Mir Lodhi. "A little planning can go a long way toward helping everyone enjoy a safe and fun evening."
For parents and caregivers:
Accompany young children while trick-or-treating.
If older children are going out with friends, agree on a route, check-in plan, and return time.
Make sure costumes allow children to see clearly and walk safely.
Add reflective materials or carry flashlights to improve visibility.
Review road safety rules and use designated crossings whenever possible.
Inspect treats before children eat them, and discard anything that appears opened, damaged, or suspicious.
For trick-or-treaters:
Stay with your parent, caregiver, or agreed group.
Walk, don't run, and watch for vehicles when crossing roads.
Only visit well-lit homes and remain outside when collecting treats.
Never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
Wait until treats have been checked by a trusted adult before eating them.
For drivers:
Slow down and watch for children, especially near intersections, driveways, and parked vehicles.
Expect the unexpected, as excited children may enter the roadway suddenly.
Eliminate distractions and remain alert throughout the evening.
Never drive while impaired.
Residents handing out treats can also help by turning on exterior lights and keeping walkways clear of potential tripping hazards.
For an emergency or immediate danger, call 911.
The Grande Prairie Police Service wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
