From October 9th to 12th, Peace Officers with Grande Prairie Enforcement Services participated in Operation Impact, a national traffic safety campaign aimed at reducing injuries and fatalities on Canadian roadways by targeting high-risk driving behaviours.
During the four-day campaign, Peace Officers focused their enforcement efforts on speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt offences, and other dangerous driving behaviours.
A total of 223 violation tickets were issued during the campaign. Of those, 137 were for speeding offences, with 80 occurring in school zones on October 9th. Additional enforcement resulted in tickets for distracted driving, seatbelt offences, and other traffic safety offences.
Peace Officers also worked with Grande Prairie Police Service to remove impaired drivers from the road, resulting in two impaired driving charges during the campaign.
In addition, two suspended drivers and one uninsured vehicle were removed from the road. Peace Officers also executed two outstanding arrest warrants after a traffic stop revealed a driver was wanted on unrelated matters.
"Road safety is a shared responsibility. Decisions made behind the wheel have the potential to save lives and make our roads safer for everyone," says Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman. "Whether it's speeding, driving distracted, failing to wear a seatbelt, or driving while impaired, choosing to take unnecessary risks can have serious and lasting consequences. Making safe, responsible choices every time you get behind the wheel helps protect everyone who uses our roads."
Grande Prairie Enforcement Services reminds motorists that unsafe driving behaviours remain a leading factor in serious collisions. By obeying posted speed limits, staying focused on the road, and making responsible choices behind the wheel, drivers can help keep Grande Prairie's roads safe.
