Access to Information Requests
The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) is committed to transparency, accountability, and the protection of personal information. We administer access to information requests and privacy obligations in accordance with Alberta's Access to Information Act (ATIA) and Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), both of which came into effect on June 11, 2025.
GPPS maintains a Privacy Management Program (PMP) in accordance with the requirements of POPA. The PMP is responsible for processing Access to Information Requests. To request a copy of our PMP, please contact the Access and Privacy Coordinator at ATI@gppolice.com or at the address listed below.
Access to Information Requests
Alberta’s Access to Information Act (ATIA) provides individuals with a right of access to records held by public bodies, such as the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS). ATIA requests should be used where records are not available through routine disclosure or other established police processes.
Types of Requests
Personal Information Requests
You may request access to your own personal information held by GPPS, or the personal information of an individual you are legally authorized to represent. If you are requesting access to another person's personal information, you will be required to provide documentation showing that you are authorized to act on their behalf. This may include written consent from the individual, guardianship documents, a power of attorney, executorship, or other legal authorization.
Examples include:
- Police occurrence records containing your personal information
- 911 or non-emergency call recordings involving you
- Complaint files in which you are the identified complainant
- Records relating to your interactions with GPPS
- Employment or recruitment records held by GPPS
No application fee applies to a Personal Information Request, however copying or reproduction fees may apply where permitted by legislation when copying fees exceed $10. GPPS will provide a fee estimate if you are required to pay fees before processing your request.
General Information Requests
General requests relate to information that does not contain your personal information. These requests are usually topical in nature and relate to organizational operations that do not contain personal information. Examples include:
- GPPS policies
- Statistical reports
- Organizational records
- Operational reports that may be disclosed under ATIA
An application fee of up to $50 may apply to General Information Requests. Additional fees may apply where authorized under ATIA regulations. A fee estimate will be provided if you are required to pay fees beyond the application fee, before processing your request. Processing of a General Request will not begin until the initial application fee is received.
Requesting Correction of Personal Information
If you believe factual information about you held by GPPS is inaccurate or incomplete, you may request a correction. There is no fee associated with a correction request.
Please note that opinions, witness statements, investigative conclusions, or judicial findings generally cannot be altered through the correction process.
Submitting a Request
To process requests efficiently, applicants should provide:
- Full legal name
- Current mailing address
- Telephone number and email address
- Date of birth (for personal requests)
- A detailed description of the records sought
- Relevant dates, file numbers, occurrence numbers, locations, or names involved
Please fill out the form HERE to assist in processing your request. Please note that requests that are overly broad, unclear, or lacking sufficient detail may require clarification and could delay processing.
Continuing requests can also be considered wherein a request is processed repeatedly at a pre-determined time interval over a period of up to two years. An initial processing fee of $50 is required for a continuing request.
If you are making a General Request, the $25 processing fee must be included with your request. Requests will not be processed until the fee is received. Fees can be paid by cheque or money order made out to the City of Grande Prairie or in person at the front counter of GPPS Headquarters.
Correction requests must be submitted in writing, identify the specific information to be corrected, explain why the information is inaccurate, and include supporting documentation where appropriate. Please be sure to submit a copy of your government-issued photo ID along with your request.
Per section 4 of the ATIA Regulation, if the applicant’s ability to read or write English is limited, or if the applicant has a physical disability or condition that impairs their ability to make a written request, the request can be made orally. Contact the Access and Privacy Coordinator by telephone at (587) 803-2157 for more information.
Requests can be emailed to the Access and Privacy Unit at ATI@gppolice.com, along with a photo of the front and back of your valid government-issued photo ID. Requests can also be submitted by mail or in person to the Grande Prairie Police Service Headquarters:

Identity Verification
To protect personal information, GPPS must verify the identity of individuals requesting personal information. Applicants requesting their own information must provide one piece of valid government-issued photo ID, and additional verification as required.
Applicants requesting records on behalf of another person must also provide appropriate legal authority, such as guardianship documentation, Power of Attorney, or estate administration documents.
Response Times
GPPS will respond to ATIA requests within 30 business days of receipt of the request, pursuant to section 13(1) of ATIA. In certain circumstances, statutory time extensions may apply, including where large volumes of records are involved, third-party consultations are required, or the request is particularly complex. If a time extension is required, the applicant will be notified by their preferred method of communication.
Records That May Not Be Disclosed
While ATIA provides a right of access to records, it also contains a number of exceptions to disclosure.
Records may be withheld in whole or in part where disclosure could, for example, interfere with an active law enforcement investigation or ongoing prosecution, reveal confidential investigative techniques, endanger the safety of individuals, unreasonably invade another person’s privacy, or reveal information obtained from another public body or law enforcement agency where disclosure is restricted by law. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list; for more information, please refer to Division 2 of ATIA or email the Access and Privacy Coordinator at ATI@gppolice.com.
If a record contains information for which disclosure would be harmful to an individual or the public at large, harmful to law enforcement, or may be an unreasonable invasion of a third party’s personal privacy, GPPS has the right pursuant to section 14(2) of ATIA to refuse to confirm or deny the existence of the record.
Police of Jurisdiction
Grande Prairie Police Service took over the police of jurisdiction from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on October 21, 2026. Some police files from before that date will be retained by the RCMP, and Access to Information Requests for those files must be processed by the RCMP. If it is determined that your request falls under RCMP jurisdiction, you will be referred to them to make the request. RCMP Access to Information requests can be made here:
