The Grande Prairie Police Service, Grande Prairie Enforcement Services, and Alberta's Sheriff Highway Patrol joined forces on August 21, 2026, for their first coordinated commercial vehicle enforcement operation, identifying numerous violations and removing multiple unsafe vehicles from local roads.
The operation focused on commercial vehicles travelling through Grande Prairie on area highways. By combining expertise and resources, officers and inspectors were able to address safety concerns within the commercial transportation sector and improve highway safety for the public.
Over the course of approximately six hours, 23 commercial vehicle inspections were conducted at a designated inspection site south of the Grande Prairie Airport. A total of 45 violations related to vehicle safety and regulatory compliance were identified.
During the operation:
- 18 commercial vehicles were placed out of service until required repairs or deficiencies are addressed;
- 12 provincial violation tickets were issued; and,
- More than 50 Mandatory Alcohol Screening tests were conducted.
One driver also received an Immediate Roadside Sanction after failing to comply with Alberta's zero-tolerance alcohol requirements for commercial drivers. The driver was operating a fully loaded commercial vehicle carrying fuel products with a gross vehicle weight of approximately 63,500 kilograms.
"This operation demonstrates the value of collaboration between public safety partners and our shared commitment to keeping Alberta's roadways safe," says GPPS Superintendent John Respet. "By working together, we can effectively identify unsafe vehicles and drivers, improve compliance within the commercial transportation industry, and help protect everyone travelling on our highways."
The success of the inaugural operation highlights the value of coordinated enforcement initiatives and could lead to future collaborative projects focused on traffic safety throughout the region.
